Oklahoma artist Jude Tolar often chooses to focus on a single flower (or small grouping), viewing that flower as her model, and then painting it as a portrait. “Painting pastel florals as portraits allows me to filter out distracting details and aim for a more succinct, striking floral painting,” she says. “We commonly think of a portrait as a visual expression of a person, and the same approach can help you capture the essence of a flower.”

Enjoy this gallery of her floral “portraits.” Find more tips from the artist on painting pastel florals in the April 2016 issue of Pastel Journal, which is available now at northlightshop.com in print or as an instant download, and on newsstands March 8.
